I can’t believe it’s August…
Where did the summer go?
Seems like only yesterday
I took out my new hoe.
I planted some new seedlings
To get a jump on spring.
But now the corn has ripened
And birds are taking wing.
The days are getting shorter,
I’m reading with a lamp.
Abandoned by the sun,
The mornings brisk and damp
The Rose of Sharon’s blooming
And Queen Ann’s Lacey head
Has shown herself already.
Tomatoes? Almost dead
The ripe acorns are falling,
Loosestrife's run amuck.
Jewelweed flaunts it's yellow horn,
The lake holds not one duck
Choke cherries grow plump and dark
The broccoli's gone to seed
My neighbor's started stacking wood
And mint's become a weed
The 'squitoes haven't bothered us
At campfires at night
Day lilies, once plentiful,
Have disappeared from sight.
Back to school’s upon us.
It happens every year.
Long before I’m ready,
Behold...September’s here
