TURTLE HAIKU

Turtles sun themselves
Gain energy from the sun
Basking in stillness

'Till intruders come
They slip into the water
Silently they hide

Until danger's past
They remain underwater
To emerge later

Once again they'll perch
Content in the warm sunshine
On their favorite log

WEDDING DAY!

Once upon a time
I taught you how to rhyme.
Dressed you in your skirt,
And kissed away your hurt.

I loved to watch you play,
Learning every day.
Taking it all in,
So one day you would win.

Sneakers to be tied,
Those never-ending rides;
Soccer, dancing, cheering,
Then "god, what's that you're wearing?!"

I watched you as you grew,
And even then I knew
That someday you would be
So happy and carefree.

This journey that you're on
Can sometimes seem so long.
For me, it flew so fast!
The present's now the past.

As you walk down that aisle,
I'll look at you and smile.
Don't fret about my tears,
Reminders of the years.

Fun things that we would do,
Chalk, the beach, the zoo.
These memories I treasure;
I love you beyond measure.

Now here's my heartfelt wish
As you seal it with a kiss
For Nick and you, his wife,
I wish you both a happy life!

FOX HAIKU

Four fox pups sniffing,
Exploring on wobbly legs
Stay close to their den

Step out carefully
Then instinctively they hide
Warned by a slight sound

Nature’s camouflage
Blends them into the background
Shields them from harm’s way

Watching me, wary
I can’t make them understand
I mean them no harm

OSPREY HAIKU

Osprey flies above
Taking to the sky on wing
Searching, seeking prey

Dipping and soaring
Scans the water for movement
Deadly clues to tell

Where lunch is hiding
Once spotted, there’s no escape
She dives and clutches

Over in a blink
The theme of nature’s story
Death means life for her

WHERE DID THE SUMMER GO?

I can’t believe it’s August…
Where did the summer go?
Seems like only yesterday
I took out my new hoe.

I planted some new seedlings
To get a jump on spring.
But now the corn has ripened
And birds are taking wing.

The days are getting shorter,
I’m reading with a lamp.
Abandoned by the sun,
The mornings brisk and damp

The Rose of Sharon’s blooming
And Queen Ann’s Lacey head
Has shown herself already.
Tomatoes? Almost dead

The ripe acorns are falling,
Loosestrife's run amuck.
Jewelweed flaunts it's yellow horn,
The lake holds not one duck

Choke cherries grow plump and dark
The broccoli's gone to seed
My neighbor's started stacking wood
And mint's become a weed

The 'squitoes haven't bothered us
At campfires at night
Day lilies, once plentiful,
Have disappeared from sight.

Back to school’s upon us.
It happens every year.
Long before I’m ready,
Behold...September’s here
